Having been commissioned following the 1870 defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune of 1871, work on this enormous mock Romano-Byzantine edifice began in 1877. Paid for from the public purse and completed almost half a century later, in 1914, it was consecrated in 1919, by which time a jumble of architects had succeeded Paul Abadie, winner of the original competition. The results are impressive, especially given its prominent position atop the hill of Montmartre, and the interior is covered in lavish mosaics.
Ghajn Tuffieha Bay Beach feels secluded in nature, except for the umbrellas and lounge chairs for rent, public restrooms, and a snack bar. Considered one of Malta’s top beaches, Ghajn Tuffieha is favored by locals who appreciate the quiet, peaceful environment. Continuing seven more kilometers from Ghajn Tuffieha Bay is Gnejna Bay, a small protected bay surrounded by steep limestone cliffs. Hike down a flight of steep steps to the gorgeous orange sand beach, which is popular with swimmers and snorkelers. Water ski and canoe rentals are also available, as well as public restrooms and food stands. Between Ghajn Tuffieha Bay and Gnejna Bay is the rural village of Mgarr in a pastoral landscape of vine-covered hills and small farms. Outdoorsy types will enjoy the scenic hiking trails from Mgarr into the countryside and along the coast to Gnejna Bay. Other places of interest on Kalymnos include the cave of the Nymphs, and the old Byzantine churches and monasteries, in which you can see wonderful displays of impressive frescoes and religious icons.
